Nouryon Completes Peroxides Expansion in Brazil
30th June 2020
Specialty chemicals company Nouryon has completed a project to more than double capacity for organic peroxides at its plant in Itupeva, Brazil. The Dutch company said the expansion will add capacity for methyl ethyl ketone peroxides (MEKP) as well as dibenzyl peroxide (BPO) pastes and waxes.
The chemicals are used in the production of polymer composites for fast-growing markets such as wind turbines and civil construction.
This expansion is the latest in a series of investments Nouryon has undertaken to strengthen its Polymer Catalysts business, which includes organic peroxides and metal alkyls. The upgrade follows the 2019 acquisition of Zhejiang Friend Chemical Co., China’s largest producer of triethyl aluminum (TEAL).
In April 2020, Nouryon announced it would acquire Sasol’s merchant TEAL business.
Commenting on the Brazilian expansion, Alain Rynwalt, vice president of Polymer Catalysts, said the investment gives the company’s composites customers greater supply reliability across the entire organic peroxides product portfolio.
The company said that one of the key upgrades at the Brazilian site is the installation of an advanced safety instrumented system (SIS).
