Chevron Phillips Chemical Successfully Starts New Ethane Cracker in Baytown, Texas

Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LP (Chevron Phillips Chemical) announced that it has successfully introduced feedstock and commenced operations of a new ethane cracker at its Cedar Bayou facility in Baytown, Texas. At peak production, the unit will produce 1.5 million metric tons/3.3 billion lbs. per year. This unit will be one of the largest and most energy efficient crackers in the world. In September 2017, the company announced the successful commissioning and start-up of two new Marlex® polyethylene units in Old Ocean, Texas, based on the company’s proprietary MarTech® technologies. Together, these assets form the bulk of the company’s U.S. Gulf Coast Petrochemicals Project (USGCPP), which was first announced in 2011.

European chemical industry calls for continued UK engagement in ECHA after Brexit

The European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic) and the UK Chemical Industries Association (CIA) have taken note of the idea advanced in Theresa May’s Mansion House speech of 2 March for the UK to remain part of EU agencies, including ECHA, possibly in the form of associate membership. However, when the EU issued its draft guidelines for the negotiations of the future EU-UK relationship on March 7, expected to be approved at the European Council of March 22-23, 2018, the draft text did not include any mention of associate membership of EU agencies.

Albemarle completes sale of portion of Performance Catalysts Solutions to W. R. Grace & Co.

Albermarle Corporation, a leader in the global specialty chemicals industry, announced today the successful completion of the previously announced sale of its polyolefin catalysts and components business to W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) in a cash transaction valued at approximately $416 million. The proceeds are subject to typical post-closing adjustments. The organometallics and curatives portions of the Performance Catalysts Solutions business remain with Albemarle.
